notify the credit bureau that shows the debt in question as unpaid

they'll investigate it, then remove it if it's not disputed

after that, it'll stay on your report for a period of time(usually 7 years), but credit scores are weighted to the present, so it'll have less effect as you go

Don't close old accounts, they remove aspects of your history and can hurt your score. Just leave them with a 0 balance.

Keep using creidt cards, but pay the balance off every month.

Don't get into trouble.

Find out where your credit score is kept and write a letter to advise them of the change of status. Your bank can help you out with the address.
