What would you say if somebody asked you if the alarm was set, would you say the alarm is off? No, you would say the alarm is on and when its tripped then its going off. Nice question by the way.

When an alarm is set, it is considered on.
When the alarm sounds - it goes off from being in the on position.
You're one deep kid, if your head starts to hurt, go take a nap.

I suppose that the alarm will, if you let it go long enough, go off. It's like any expression we use that makes no sense.

It has to do with the construction of the human brain itself.You want to say the word "ON" but it hits a series of reverses in the frontal lobes and by the time it makes it out your mouth it's "OFF"----
