The name "Israel" is rooted in the Hebrew Bible, where Jacob is renamed Israel after wrestling with a mysterious adversary.[3] The biblical nation fathered by Jacob was then called "The Children of Israel" or the "Israelites." Citizens of the modern State of Israel are referred to as "Israelis" in English.
In an interlinear, literal translation of Genesis 32:28, the first mention of the word "Israel" in the Bible reads as follows: "And-he-is-saying not Jacob he-shall-be-said further name-of-you but rather Israel that you-are-upright with Elohim and with mortals and-you-are-prevailing."[4] Thus one literal translation of ×שר××, Israel, is "Upright (with) God" (×שר-××; Ishr-al).

In Hebrew, Israel means 'struggles with God'. Jacob's name was changed to Israel after he had a struggle with God in a vision. (Gen. 32:28)
God made a promise to Abraham that he would have descendants like the stars and he promised the land of Canaan (part of which is known as Israel today). Jacob is Abraham's grandson.
The nation of Israel takes it's name from Jacob's changed name and it is a fitting name for the people because of their constant struggle with God (that is basically what the Old Testament is about).
The context of this and how it applies to Christians is that Abraham's descendants are not the biological descendant's (as the nation is) but believers in Christ. The promise of Canaan is the kingdom of heaven that can only be entered through Christ-the ultimate sacrifice (which is why Christians do not practice animal sacrifice).
Practicers of Judaism (the Israeli's religion) are not considered to be a part of the kingdom of heaven because they do not accept that Jesus was the Messiah (or in Greek, Christ). They are still waiting.

Israel is the name of a man (or patriarch) which is a descendant of Abraham and Isaac. Read Genesis it gives a good description of the whole thing.
His name was changed from "Jacob" which means "heel holder or supplanter" to "Israel" which means"God prevails".
Genesis 32:28 (KJV)
28 And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.
You may be surprised if you read the accounts in Genesis how much land is actually given to Israel.

Israel comes from Yisrael the other name of Jacob (Yaakov) in the Bible. Since the Land of Israel (Eretz Yisrael) was given to the children of Israel as an inhritance, the land was named after them.

From God. God changed Jacob's name to Israel in Genesis (http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?book_id=1&chapter=32&verse=27&end_verse=29&version=31&context=context ) in the Bible. The nation of Israel is descended from Jacob.

From the Israelite faraos of the 18th dinasty in ancient egypt.
Israel stands for ISIS - RA - EL. Thats an ancient trinity of gods, similar to the one of crhistianity. ISIS is the moon, RA the sun, and EL is Saturn.
The name Israel has got nothing to do with Jews.

Israel is another name for Jacob, son of Issac who is son of Abraham (known as father of the nations). Jacob was blessed by God and then names him Israel. It means "Prince of God".
