Make Newton's test. Take an apple (or a snowball in this case) and drop it, does it go up or down?? If down, then when you dig a hole you are also digging down. Now if what you referr is about the magnetic lines that is a different story. In one of the poles the magnetic lines go inwards and in the other they go upwards so that if you imagine to be a magnetic particle withing the magnetic lines, and if going with the flow for you is going "upward" and against it is "downward", in that case depending if you are on the north pole or the south you will be going downward in one and upward in the other.

You are digging down. When you see maps with South at the bottom and North at the top it's only because that's the way maps are shown universally. Since gravity pulls us towards the centre of the earth wherever you are on the planet the ground is below you.

up. The south pole is the bottom of the earth, and if you are digging you'd be digging towards the north, or up!

Look at the Earth as it appairs on pictures, then you're digging up, but if you're looking at the circumstances, you are digging down, because normally you can't dig up.

up and down basically carry on with to path in connection with the outdoors of the earth (from area it quite is what maximum everybody is assuming), up and down are meaningless. you would be digging down in simple terms such as you may from any element on the earths floor.

Down, because the direction down is determined by gravity. In space and astronomically speaking there is no up or down. It is a phenomon experienced solely in places in which there is gravity or some other form of reference to which one can be up or down against.
