The easiest way for me to eat fiber is to eat a bowl of Shredded Wheat (frosted) or Raisin Bran every morning. But, I still have them nasty lil' buggers. I use Tucks pads everytime I go to the bathroom, with or without a BM. It also helps to wash well when you shower.

You can also try a sitz bath if your doctor gives the thumbs up. You can buy a sitz bath kit at a drug store, or fill your bathtub with quite warm water (not hot though) to about your hips. (Not higher than that.. hence the "sitz" name (german for "sitting" I believe). Sit in it for about 10 minutes or so. Really it seems simple, don't put anything but warm water in the tub, no bubbles, no soaps.

Then get out and put a Tucks pad between your bottom cheeks. Keep it there and lie down for a while. Doing this will help alleviate some of the discomfort.

If you find that you are really hurting while trying to have a bowel movement, talk to your doctor. Stool softners/laxatives are not usually prescribed to pregnant women because of the high risk of meconium being released in utero (the meds cross the placenta to the baby).

After birth they will get MUCH worse, and you will wish for the ones you have. Only then stool softners are a much needed gift, and you can have surgery a few months postpartum if your doctor recommends it.

For now, try the sitz bath (under doc's okay) and the Tucks pad hint I gave you.
Good luck!
