Yes, Animals have very keen eye sight as well as smell. What the tail, ears and other signs of friendlyness. If hair around neck stands on end or at base of tail. Stand still allow animal to smell you. This means animal doesn't recognize you by sight but maybe by smell.

Absolutely Yes! They even recognise the sound of an engine. My Rottie used to know the sound of my motorbike when I came home from work

Yes, my dog and cat can see me coming up to the house through the windows and they are happy... at least the dog is, I'm just guessing about the cat.

Don't forget touch. I was out of town and my dog was at my family's house for three days. She was going deaf and blind. When I went to pick her up and touched her while she was facing away from me, she wagged her tail "for the first time in three days" as my sister said. She did not see or hear me and probably did not smell me yet as she did not respond until the moment I touched her.

I think hearing is the big thing for cats anyway. Mine know when a member of the family is on their way up the path, well before the door opens.

They can recognize you by sight, smell, they know what you sound like, when you walk, the sound of your car or the sound the key makes in the lock when you come home.
