Don't buy a package holiday, don't plan anything just find a cheapest flight to anywhere, book it.
The go to alpha rooms web site it will give listing for nearly every hotel motel and inn near where the flight lands.
Many of the old eastern block countries are very cheap hotels are cheap transportation is good and very cheap.
That was how my wife and I ended up on Honeymoon in Prague because it was cheaper then driving to Cornwall.
The return flight for 2 and 3 star hotel ended up being about £300 for 5 days a 3 day Train, tram, bus and underground pass is about £2.50 meals are cheap beer and drinks are cheap everyone speaks English at least some most better then any New Yorker I ever met.
All those places Romania, Croatia, Czech rep, Slovakia, Slovenia, all dead cheap.
They are desperate for tourists so there is no crime they are super nice to you.
All those countries treat holiday makers like VIP's and you can pick up lots of goodies for next to nothing.
We always holiday this way we save a bundle and go native as soon as we get there.
I have seen half the world this way.
It also makes your holiday unique.
From Alaska to Costa Rica, Thailand to Namibia going native is the way.
You get to see things the lame pre-packaged holidays miss. Especially English package Holidays they are always put you in some place where they serve Carling and fish and chips.
The whole point of getting away it to get away.

Join Youth Hostell Association. They have plenty of literature. Go to a students union at a university, college etc and check out their travel service.

BTW it is a good idea to say where you are in this type of question. People in other nations can give ideas on their own home.
