The brand I'm using is Acuvue Oasys and I've had this problem for at least a year. After about 6 hours they start to make my eyes red (bloodshot to the iris) and eventually I have to take them out because they're so irritating. It's worse in the winter.

I'm now trying to wear them with allergy eye drops prescribed by my (awful) eye doctor, but now the lenses have difficulty even sticking to my eyes. Am I doomed to wear glasses from now on? Thanks!

Two possibilities:

1) You cannot wear contacts

2) You need a different brand.

You need to see your Eye Dr. and discuss the problems you are incurring. Often times, switching the type of contact is the remedy for you.

Are you taking them out every night like you are supposed to? I use Acuvue Advance with Hydroclear, they allow for the most moisture possible without drying out my eyes. I had a problem with my contacts making my eyes dry and itchy. But these work great:

Some lenses do not allow your eye to "breathe" and get enough oxygen, thus causing irritation and bloodshot eyes. My brother-in-law never takes his out, even though they were the ones you aren't supposed to leave in. This caused an absess on his eye and had to be given medication. His eye doctor switched him over to Night & Day lenses, that are more breathable and you can wear them even when you sleep:

You may want to switch contacts or eye doctors. Look into lasik surgery also. It can be more affordable in the long run, because you won't have to spend so much money on glasses and lenses.

When I had the drying out problem, I used Visine for contacts, to moisturize my lenses and eyes, purchased at Walmart or Kmart:

Good luck.

Contacts tend to dry out your eyes so you need to keep them wet all the time. Use a soothing moisture type eye drop. If the problem is allergy related your eyes usually itch beyond belief and they get dry and sticky. If your allergy drops and moisture drops and disposable contact lens are not working for you then you may have to be a glasses wearer. But which is more attractive: Cool glasses or bright red swollen itchy blotchy giant dark bags and tons of wrinkles eyes?????

No, you're not doomed. You probably just need a different brand, or else yours might not be properly fit. Try a different Dr. and you should be able to be fitted in something that will work for you. Did you work slowly into wearing them? If you moved into 6 hours too fast without building up your eyes tolerance, that can happen.

if i was you i would try a different type of contact that keep the moisture in the contact and easier to wear. you may have is known as dry eyes that don't make tears to keep contact moist.
talk to your eye doctor or try someone different
good luck
i wear glasses too and yes they are a pain

It appears your allergic to the contact lenses or your extra sensitive. Contact lenses might not be the best for you and I suggest that you go back to wearing your glasses or laser surgery.

I have the same brand. My eyes get that way if I have them in for too long or if I'm in a smoke-filled room for too long. I have extremely dry eyes, though...
