i guess a nostradamus type caveman, seen into the future, seen and heard me using that name to an ex. The next day he came across a timid wolf, seen the resemlence and the rest is history!

seriously if they had called it a elephant, then youd still be wondering. Its also called a chein in french - sounds nothing like dog. i think since language varys from place to place its just that it has to be called something and the word dog was randomly chosen by maybe the village leader?

The better word for this question is...."unexplainable". There is no way to really understand who came up with these words. I mean even if we can say that a certain person started the use of a word, where did this thought come from? What is a thought anyways? What makes up our feelings? There are some questions we may never know the answers to and if we do, by the time we do we will most likely not be here to share the good news or tell anyone about it.

Once upon a time, God gave his pet to
the earth to keep company with human.

Consequently, the pet was found best loyalty.
In commemmoration, human (most likely a priest)
named the pet backward to what was worshiped (God). So the dog is man's best friend and
all dogs go to heaven!

This fable was told long.. long.. time ago!
