It varies from company to company, and often there is alot of overlap. (IE programmers design sometimes and engineers do coding sometimes) I think officially though a good comparison would be construction. Software engineers are like the architects and programmers are like the builders.

Computer software engineers actually determine what the specific needs of computer user's are. They then design, construct, test and monitor software and computer systems. Programmers are responsible for 'telling' the computer how to function according to what the engineer has designed. They code, line by line, instructions into the computer making it run.

programmers are brainless people(no offense) who jus do the coding.. they shud be called coders infact..

software engineers are the people who design and build the software.. their jobs are more interesting and more challenging
