If your motherboard does not provide SATA ports, then I would not bother to add an SATA drive to your system. Get something that is more appropriate, such as a (parallel) ATA drive. I would even consider a USB drive instead.

But if you MUST, then you have to add an SATA controller board to your computer.

You'd need an external enclosure which would convert the SATA cable to USB. Example:

Then just install the SATA drive into the enclosure and plug the USB cable into your PC and it should automatically appear as a new hard drive.

You need to install a SATA add on card to an open PCI slot in your computer, here's a link to an example card. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16815102102

It will come with any necessary drivers. Once installed you can connect your hard drive. You may need to run the installation utility provided with the SATA hard drive to set it up to work on your computer.
