how to prune a california palm bush?

growing in corner space in patio, approx 5 feet tall 8 feet around, just want to keep it contained by making it less around and less height

It is difficult to contain a palm. Of course, you can trim the width, but that will take away from the palm's natural beauty. Your only real option is to prune severely and let it slowly recover. I would only attempt that in the spring.
