It is important due to the close proximity to the U.S.
In addition, since it's government is communist, there is concern over whether or not it could be used as a staging ground for an attack on the United States not just by Cuba but their communist allies. Remember reading about the "Cuban Missile Crisis" in history class? It was suspected that the former Soviet Union was stockpiling short and medium range missiles in Cuba in preparation for an attack or to be used as leverage so the United States government would be less apt to meddle in any dealings the Soviet Union engaged in that would not be in the Unites States' best interest.

Unfortunately some people believe the propaganda they are subjected to, and never bother to research the people involved.

The USA has lost it's credibility, and is losing it's stranglehold on the rest of the world.
Hugo Chavez is a clear example of what can be achieved when countries disregard their orders from Washington:-
Over 17 million people now have access to free health care and medicines for the first time.
Over 1 million people taught to read and write.
Participation encouraged for all Venezuelans in the formation, implementation, and operation of their democracy.
Venezuela has become truly, a democracy of the people, by the people and for the people, after years of US intervention and suppression.

But of course the people in power in the USA have labeled Chavez a terrorist, communist, dictator, etc. etc.

Around the world, whenever an alternative political systems (Think CUBA) have emerged they have been brutally crushed, or isolated by our ruling elites for what they call "the threat of a good example"

Because it stood up to the US and they are pissed off. All Castro did was take control of the nations assets for the Cuban people. The Cuban Missile Crisis was as a result of the US blockade. Castro wanted to make Cuba a Social Democracy similar to Denmark. The US forced him int the Russian Camp. Today ther is no USSR, but the hype against Cuba is still ther. It will be until the Cuban Mafia, now in Miami returns and sets up their brothels, drug dens, and child porno like they did under Batista. As for Cuba being a threat get real, It's like saying Togo is a threat to China. The worst crime you can commit in Cuba is "Child Abuse"- 25 years. Cuba is in the process of getting rid of the Death Penelty like most civilized nations,

Thing strategic here. Look at the proximity of Cuba to the United States. Think defense of the country. Hope this makes sense.

I don't think Cuba has been important to the U.S. since the early sixties, that could change when Castro dies, of course. The mafia wants their playground back.
