Actually, if you are talking about the Indians in the Southwest, the first peoples to invade those areas we know as Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado, were the Aztecs who made frequent raids into the Southwest to capture the peaceful Pueblo people and drag them back to Mexico to use as slaves, sacrifices and servants. This goes back over 1000 years ago.

If you are talking about modern history, then it's the Spanish who came into the Southwest, starting about 1545.

There's more history in the Southwest of the U.S. than on the East Coast and the Spanish were the FIRST Europeans to settle permanent villiages in this country and NOT the English as the England-centric textbooks would have you believe.

The colony of San Gabriel, about 40 miles North of Santa Fe, was the first successful European colony in the New World and dated to 1598 or thereabouts... Santa Fe was settled in 1608 and made the official town and capital of northern Mexico in 1610. The Jamestown settlement was established in 1610 so the Spanish had been in the New World for about 60 years before the English settled their first colony.
