there done like this to prevent breakage,,and it has been a thing with Cadillac,s for a long time,they also did this as a experimental thing to start with,,but now just about all Cadillac,s have them,,hope this help.

Is spring tensioned, so basically, when something hits it, it can move, and spring back.
