I'm rusty on math and I need to tutor a middle schooler on this concept.

more details, please. I need it simple, though. How do you divide a fraction by a decimal??

First, change either the decimal to a fraction (3/10) then take -3/4 divided by 3/10 to solve for x. Or you can change -3/4 to a decimal (-.75) then take -.75 divided by .3. Either way the solution for x will be the same.

First convert the decimal .3 to a fraction

.3 = 3/10

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -- - - - -- -

The equation becomes

3/10x = - 3/4

10/3(3/10)x = - 3/4(10/3)

Invert 3/10 to 10/3. to both sides of the equation

x = - 3/4(10/3)

The three(3) cancell

X= - 10/4

x = - 2.5

The answer is - 2.5

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Method two using the decimal (.3) on the left side of the equation.

.3x = -3/4

.3x/.3 = - 3/4/.3

Dividing both sides by .3

x = -3/4/3/1

x = - 3/4 x 1/.3

x = - 3/1.2

Multiplying 3 x 1 = 3 and multiplying 4 x .3 = 1.2

x = - 2.5

Dividing - 3 by 1.2 equals 2.5

The answer is - 2.5

ok. theres two ways to solve this equation.

1. to solve it in decimal form

-3/4 is -0.75 in decimal form.

so the equation is:
.3x=-0.75

now multiply each side by 100 so that all the numbers are whole numbers:
30x=-75

now divide each side by 30:
30x/30=-75/30

x=-2.5

2. solve it using fractions

.3 is 3/10 in fraction form

so the equation is:

3/10x=-3/4

mulitply each side by 10/3, so u can get x by itself on 1 side of the equal sign:

3/10x*10/3= -3/4*10/3

x=-10/4

now reduce it:
x=-5/2

x=-2 1/2

so yeah... hope that helped ya.

convert .3 to 3/10
LHS = 3x/10 = -3/4
multiply by 10/3

x = -3/4*10/3 = -30/12 = -5/2

2006-08-06 15:44:17 · answer #4 · answered by Mein Hoon Na 7 · 0 0

x= -3/4 * 10/3 = -5/2 = 2.5

.3x = -.3/4

Multiply both sides by 10 to remove the decimal.
3x = -30/4

Divide both sides by 3
x = -10/4

Simpliy x = -2.5

Alternate solution

Convert -3/4 to decimal
.3x = -.75
Divide both sides by .3
x = -2.5

It takes one step - multiply both sides by 10/3

x = -30/12 or -2.5

.3x = (-3/4)
(3/10)x = (-3/4)

cross multiply

-30x = 12
x = (-12/30)
x = (-2/5)
