Report from BBC World:
The UN is discussing a draft resolution on the Lebanon conflict, demanding that Hezbollah halt all attacks and Israel stop all offensive military operations.
US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said a quick vote was important.
If the resolution was passed soon, it should quickly end large-scale violence, she said.
But she warned that ongoing "skirmishes" could not be ruled out, and the resolution was only the first step towards lasting peace.
A senior Lebanese official said his country would reject the resolution.
Parliament speaker Nabih Berri, a Hezbollah negotiator, said the draft ignored a Lebanese government ceasefire plan, including calls for the withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon.

Will this ‘one-sided resolution’ be just another reason for people to regard the UN as weak?
I think this UN resolution is not addressing the root cause of the conflict in the Middle East. Why can't the Western world see that the Arab/Muslim world don't want a state of Israel? (They have been opposed to it from its creation) The ONLY solution is that somehow, and I don't know how this could be done, (perhaps the hatred is too deep-rooted) the Arab/Muslim world has to be 'persuaded' to accept the 'existence' of Israel. When are the Western leaders going to start listening to 'the other side'? Until they do, there will NEVER be a day of peace in the Middle East.

Your thoughts, please?

Fox News:
Rice: Israel, Hezbollah Have Obligation to Adhere to U.N. Resolution
CRAWFORD, Texas — U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Sunday that neither side is getting what it wanted but both sides have "an obligation to respond to U.N. Security Council's resolution" aimed at halting the fighting between Israel and Lebanese Hezbollah guerrillas.
"There are things the Israelis wanted and things the Lebanese wanted, and everybody wasn't going to get everything that they wanted," Rice said at a briefing in Crawford, Texas, where she met with President George W. Bush at his ranch.

Why do people regard the UN is a 'living entity'? The UN is the decision-making body of most of the states of the world. If the UN is weak, it is because the member states don't know what they are doing.

The Western world is not the problem. The problem is calls for the destruction of Israel. No group has the right to advocate the eradication of an entire race or nation. It is also not as simple as Israel leaving the Middle East, take Hezbollah for example who has stated that they will chase Jews to wherever they go in order to exterminate them from the Earth. As for the UN. The UN stands for nothing, they will not enforce their resolutions. Show me one conflict which they have truly brought a successful end to. The UN is a corrupt organization. It is unfortunate because it could have been such a force for good.

I agree that the root cause of the conflict is the deep rooted hatred for a Jewish state. However, that hatred is most deep rooted in the Fascist Islamic Terrorist movement (ie. Hezbollah, Hamas, ect.). I really think that there can be a lasting co-existance, perhaps even peace among the majority of Muslims and Jews living in the region, if given a chance to be free from the influence of the extremist groups. Hezbollah, therefore, must be crushed, moved out of the way, and then the road to peace can start to be laid down. Working with Hezbollah is likened to the Clan. There wasn't going to be any peace for Catholics and Blacks in the South until they became insignificant in size. The same holds true for Hezbollah.

it' state sponsored terrorism... and with Israel's neighbours saying that they want to 'wipe Israel off the map' that's why they phrased it as 'offensive' so that Isael can still defend itself.

It's a difficult one as the international community don't agree with the how Israel has conducted the whole thing, but could they have done anything else.... besides, Hezbollah are using human sheilds so 'collateral damage' is unavoidable.

The other dimension is the American factor as Israel is an American 'friend' then it's getting the wrath of the anti-American sentiment in global politics at the moment. Maybe the Bush administration is getting sick of being the world's police....

But one thing is for sure something needs to be done soon as the whole situation could be elevated in to a bigger and messier war.

No UN Resolution will ever work in this case. Look at 1559 from 2 years ago. Israel will not stop until all of Hezbollah is disarmed or dead!

Yea, your right, the UN is out of touch and useless. I am starting to wonder if they really do want peace at all or if this is giving them a excuse to continue the fighting. Either way it is out of our control and it is what it is. The western world is in a war with terrorists, the terrorist won't stop until we are wiped out. Therefore, we have no alternative then to wipe them out...

The Hes-bos, Hamas, Palestinians, Al-Queda all spread hate and terrorism in the world. If only the UN just wiped them out. The world can handle the rest.

The UN is a joke. There isn't one instance in which they did what they were created to do.

Resolution 1559, disarm the Hez-Bos.

6 Years later, 12,000-15,000 rockets later, I would say thats a good definition of failure.

I think the UN is outdated and unrealistic. It should be abolished. Its just a means of advancing one`s selfish political ambitions.
