I agree with you.......Alcohol, usually is the first thing kids try....It was, my first experience, and I remember, it was a scary,, to me, because, the girlfriend I had, was drinking long before, I had my first beer, and she was already buzzed, and started "Teasing" me about my sipping it, and everyone, was Laughing at me, because, she said,"Christy, your still on, your first beer, GUZZLE-IT, Girl, or your never going to get a buzz, that way!!" And so I did as she said, being that I looked-up , to her so much, I thought, this was, how her whole family was, and so I just assumed, this was also, how my older syblings were too......But, I got so sick, after, about 2 beers, and I eventually started staying away from her, because, she was just too wild for me!!! But, yes, I agree, with you, about it being the "Gateway to Drugs", because, alot of my friends that first were just drinkers, I'd years later, seen them "In passing" they looked like "Wrecks" out hustling for another fix, of something, it was so sad, to have seen them, with their acts together, one year, and all torn-up, the next, you know...... It starts with the alcohol, for sure................ So sad, but "True".........

Maurijauna is called the gateway drug because it's normally the first drug that anyone tries. (At least that was the case before OTC medications became just as powerful as street drugs and before treenagers began to manufacture their own.)
Most people who try alcohol, never try maurijuana. And many people who try marijuana don't drink.
The thing is, most people don't go out and smoke crack or shoot heroine, until after they have been exposed to other drug use. Maurijauna was the most common.
In the 70's and 80's drug use was progressive; one thing led to another.
Now that everyone's parents smoke and most of them walk around saying, "smoking weed is not drug use"; misuse of otc's are the gateway

Let me tell you by experience a true story and you decide.
A relative of mine graduated from college and became a buyer for a large company. She began drinking in college, and by the time she was in her 30's she was out of control...hiding bottles of vodka in her washing machine and in shoe boxes in her closet. She was a manager for a large grocery chain and although she was very smart, she could not function properly. She became mean and hateful to her employees. She would do things that she could not remember. Soon she was driving drunk and passing out in front of stranger's homes. She finally was stopped by the police for DUI and went to jail twice. Now this was a person who had a good job, making $86,000 per year. She is 50 now, and here is the low down: She was fired from her job, her driver's license has been revoked, she has lost her house, and is walking the streets in order to get more vodka and living in a motel. Now they say she is bi-polar and is on all types of prescriptions, some of which are $1,100. per month. She has no job. All of this was because she could not control her urge for alcohol. This is a sad story, but one I have lived. Everybody sometime in their life will try alcohol or drugs. Alcohol is a depressent and may help you forget things, but you always face reality when you sober up. Take it easy.

I don't believe there is any true "gateway". I've known people who smoke cigarettes but have never touched a drop of alcohol or done illegal drugs. I've known alcoholics who have never smoked, and I've know "pot-heads" who have never had an alcoholic drink, nor have they ever smoked cigarettes. And of course, I've known people who do all three...you'll do what you do no matter what you start out with.

I think you are right. Alcohol is the first substance most use to get a buzz so wouldn't that make it the gateway drug?? I think so, but, they don't want to villainize alcohol because it's legal and they have to have a surplus of reasons to keep marijuana illegal. I think Alcohol is actually worse.
