I agree with comments that you should see a doctor first of all to make sure that there is nothing abnormal, menstrual cramps are certainly not a necessity of menstruation, with that said however bare in mind that GP's have a lot of things they have to know and only allot you a short space of time. As such this along with social norms means that often GP's will simply pressure you to go onto hormonal birth control to avoid the work involved in testing you for possible problems and giving you options for treatment. In short, see a doctor to insure there is no problem such as endometriosis or hormonal imbalance but don't let them get away with passing you off or just putting you onto hormonal birth control to avoid doing their job, this will just cover up the problem not resolve it.

With that all said…

Heavy periods are something I have always had, the best thing I have ever done is gotten myself a menstrual cup because they can be left in day and night for up to 12 hours without leaking or constant changes, they are also cheaper, greener and most importantly safer than tampons or commercial pads – I'll also note that tampons increase menstrual cramping, menstrual cups however don't. So I'd say if you don't already use one get yourself a menstrual cup for a start, you can buy them online or you can get yourself a Mooncup from Boots. http://www.mooncup.co.uk/wc.php?u=33

Heavy periods are often a sign of an underlying problem, for most you are probably looking at a hormonal imbalance, estrogen dominance can be a common cause, but before going down that route if you haven't already I'd suggest trying to balance out those hormones first of all – Evening Primrose Oil is very easy to get a hold of and is commonly used for this purpose, if nothing else at least it will give your body a helping hand. Thyroid and liver problems can also be contributing to heavy bleeding.

Information on how to deal with heavy periods is limited I have found, unless willing to go for more extreme medical treatment, which I think for most of us is very extreme. I have found the best thing for me was a better diet with more high protein foods, eating more bananas and seaweed helped a lot, so did increasing my intake of iron to replace what was lost during menstruation. Tincture of Shepards Purse is supposed to work wonders for this, I also believe that Vitex and Yarrow are very good as they are widely used for general menstrual problems so can assist in general menstrual health thus having a knock-on effect of improving menstruation in general.

Not suffering PMT I cannot say specifically what would help - I could very easily come up with a load of information if I was to go looking now, but I'm sure you can do that yourself so I won't insult your intelligence. I would say though the herbs mentioned above to balance hormones would help with this, I'd also suggest here Black Cohosh as a good one for this too, B vitamins would probably help you out a lot with this as well - as would an increase in supplements needed for menstruation [calcium, magnesium, and potassium]. I'd also say address any issues causing you stress as well as this can seriously effect your period.

See the doctor about you heavy periods, you might need a D&C to sort it out, you shouldn't put up with heavy periods and your doctor should be able to offer you an appointment with a gynaecologist for this problem, a D&C is just a small op that sorts the heavy period out in a lot of women and its nothing to worry about, for the PMT you could try eating either 2 ryvitas, any type or plain rice cakes, 3 times a day for about 7 days before your period is due, persevere with it cause it does work, been there seen it and had it and it was a good help for me, good luck and see your doctor as soon as possible.

Some females are unlucky enough to have periods like this and the most usual cure is the pill, depending upon their age.

My sister was the same as you and her doctor found she had ovarian cysts. Cysts are made of bodily material such as blood, bone, skin or in her case tooth material.

Every month her ovaries literally bit back!

Go to the doctor. It is such a common problem and they are the best first call every time.

You know you should really be sharing this with your doctor ..... he will have seen it a thousand times or more and you shouldn't suffer in silence! Your doctor can prescribe something to ease the problem certainly and it is important to be considered for a referal for further investigation as you may have something that is causing the problem.

You could possibly have anemia (i.e. excessive blood loss in periods). I would go to your doctor about it. He or she would probably ask you for a blood sample to test for it. I remember I did when I was about 13/14. It is very common for girls to have heavy periods and bad pains in the first couple of years after having started their periods. Believe me though, it will settle. Though do go to the doctors to put your mind at rest.

Make an appointment with your family Doctor. Get a pap-smear. That's not normal.

go to the doctors, I heard something called Dong Quai (its a herbal supplement).
It helps with PMS and the female reproductive system.

Ask for more advice from a local heath store.

MAINLY.. go to a doctor to get confirmation.
