i throw mine all together cuz of laziness, the water is so full of chemicals it wouldn't make any difference and the lack of time to do it.
just one of those things. folks laugh at me but when i see them do it they usually have piles and piles of clothes all seperated like wow cataloged even it's so anal!
i know this one lady who washes 3 times or more a week she always have 4 real big laundry baskets (they're about 3ft. wide by 4ft. high) full one is whites the other is darks the other is bright colors but she says she does her reds on wednesday, yellows on friday...
i'm like wow how the hell?
she is always busy i can't see how she does this along with cooking for 5 kids... running a take out resturant.... taking the kids to practise....
all that and more!
oh and the bedding that is also an amazing feat she makes me stressed out watching her.
i couldn't do that i'd pass out. just watching her makes me real tired.

Separate colors- Separate texture or weight-
By separating the colors and the weight of the clothing this actually preserves the clothes items and the washer /dryer.
save time too...
This seemingly extra work actually speeds up the process for example; light textured clothes dry very fast if they where mixed with heavy jeans they would over dry and need to be ironed because the weight of the jeans laying on them creasing them and run a chance to be torn up.
By separating the loads they are smaller less wear and tear on clothes, washer and drier, colors are truer/brighter, less ironing and less energy to dry light stuff.
FYI- by separating your laundry you can teach children their colors and life long habbits( as young as 2year old can help out)
Basketball games get them to help out with socks mating by playing basket ball once they match the socks then they can make a basket into the sock basket. (even us grown up can do this while watching BB on TV

If I am doing the laundry I separate everything! My husband on the other hand just puts it all together... but I won't complain because some husbands refuse to even do laundry! I guess I am lucky!

I separate, darks from lights and whites or else you'll have pink socks and underwear or greyish colored lights/whites. If you do have to wash it all together or you're washing dark red clothes, use a Shout! Color Catcher in the load, they really work, they've saved me from accidental death frequently from those new dark clothes that you wash the first time. Only $3.50 for 24 sheets. Works wonders!

i could say it is in basic terms mandatory for whites. i don't separate my easy and dark colorings, in basic terms the colors from the whites. One time washing with blue denims shouldn't injury a white shirt, yet non-end washing with dark colorings will make the whites fade and look boring and grey. As for temperature, I in basic terms wash each and everything on heat, never warm or chilly and all of my clothing are effective.

You should separate your white clothing from the darks and your delicates. You do this because you don't want any of the dark clothes to "bleed" or fade onto your white clothes. In other words, your white blouse could turn grey from the dye in your black capris!

If you buy something new, wash it by itself first time.
Avoid reds. Go with blues when you can.
Wash everything on cold. Don't bother separating.
Doing it this was works just as good, it's a lot easier, and it saves a lot of energy and money.
