moonlit, I don't know how old you are, but you will write the best essay if you write about something YOU care about. Start with your family or communtiy level. What's going on there? Does someone have a problem you can understand and/or relate to? Is someone being affected by an issue that is also a major concern for lots of other people? Is someone involved in making the world better? Are you being affected by something?
Take that story, tell it, and then look at the causes behind the scenes that might to bigger issues for humanity, whether they are problems or solutions. Make the topic bigger, but always bring it back to its effect on you, or the other person you choose to write about.
For example: I mentor a 12 year old girl with learning disabilities. Her family is under investigation for child abuse for an incident that was blown out of proportion and unfortunately made public, nationwide. Her mother has received death threats. The problem I see is that we have become so closed that we do not know our own neighbors, and do not trust them. We are quick to judge strangers across the country or world while we ignore the needy people in our own neighborhoods and families. Why? If you chose to write about this, you would be answering that question. That is what an essay of this type does. Good luck!

A model: Humanity is on a path of ______ due to ______, ergo these three things will be different: ___, ___, ___.
So, here are some possible starters:
Humanity is on a path of destruction due to irresponsible environmental policies, therefore global warming, an energy crisis, and continued skirmishes with third-world frustrates is imminent.
Humanity is on a path of continual war with terrorist groups due to imperial policies of the US and China. Higher taxes, threatened domestic tranquility, and economic upheavel are expected to continue.
Humanity is on a path towards world peace and prosperity due to _____... see if you can take it from there.
There are two parts to an essay: thinking, then writing. The writing part you probably know well enough. People don't teach the thinking part. If you really want to make your life easier, invest some time and money into getting this first part right and you'll save yourself hundreds of hours per year for as long as you're writing.
The first resource I recommend is The Minto Pyramid Principle, which is just classical thinking explained clearly. They gear their message to business writing, but it works for essays, school projects, letters, everything. Check out http://www.barbaraminto.com/
The second resource I recommend is from a computer science professor at the University of Georgia. He's very clear, and very useful. Check out http://www.ai.uga.edu/mc/WriteThinkLearn_files/frame.htm
I promise you, if you spend some extra time on your own on this, you will find yourself in an exponentially better place in your life 10 years from now. You can't test this, but I've watched the difference between those that invest a few extra hours to really get writing, and those that wish writing would just go away.
Good luck, you're doing great!

You could start with a present problem, such as the President's stupid move to ban stem cell research, and decribe the effects of problem/limitation, ei- genetic engineering, possible treatments for diseases, etc..
OR, You could say that education in general needs to change to create a better future for humanity.
I hope that helps. It's really broad, and it seems like every topic has been done to death. It's like writing a English Composition 2 essay on Capital Punishment. :)

Humanity and the future...
The way society perceives people with disabilities.
Historically people with disabilities were either killed or institutionalized. Today society is a little more accepting however still feel the need to put them in specialized schools or classrooms. In the future I hope that all teachers will be educated so that people with disabilities can be integrated in general education classroom. I hope that in the future all people will be accepted and treated with respect.

Well, that depends. What grade are you in? You can write about something that stirs up major feelings within you. Such as, war, pollution, cruelty to animals, girls, make up, guys, football. You could also write a book critique, or critique a movie you've seen recently. You may want to write about "the state of the world" as you see it. You may be interested in writing a science report on an animal you like. Still, you may want to make the topic a bit more personal, and you may write about your family, a moment in time or decision that impacted you. Basically, if this is an "open" assignment you may write about anything that is of interest to you...even if its your dog or a dumb TV show. Just write!
