Get a new boyfriend – seriously.
It is your body to do with as you wish, he should have absolutely no say in it, and the fact that he is comparing you to his ex-girlfriends as a way to get you to do as he wants is shocking to say the least, let alone unhealthy.
If a man cannot respect a woman's body then he has no place going near one, your boyfriend has shown a great deal of disrespect as well as ignorance towards female anatomy as well as a hell of a lot of disrespect to you and your body, do you really want this person near your vagina? On that point do you even want such a shallow, ignorant and insulting person as your partner?!
Having pubic hair is certainly not unhygienic, it would be detrimental to your health if that was the case and so hardly a natural occurrence in the body – it also makes me wonder if he is shaved himself and how clean he is. The pubic hair is there to keep the vagina and vulva healthy by protecting it from dirt that can get into the genitals; it is also there to help trap pheromones that attract the opposite sex.
This craze came from Japan originally, but is largely an American phenomenon – you'll notice Americans do a lot of things for the benefit of 'hygiene' to the point of causing harm to their bodies such as scented tampons (that cause infection), or such as routine infant circumcision (not only a breach in human rights but a risk to the emotional, psychological, sexual and physical health as well as risk of death). Of course American things filter down to the UK...even the men are doing this now! Removing pubic hair itself is pointless and even harmful, if only on a social level, but shaving is worse given as the pubic hair is too thick to shave - if you do get rid of it because YOU want to then it should be removed with waxing or plucking.

Don't do it for him! He should accept you the way you are...It is your own personal choice whether or not to shave down there.
It is not unhygienic to have the hair!! The hair is there for a reason...to keep stuff out of that area!!!
I personally don't shave...I did it once (for a guy) and regretted it...didn't feel comfortable with myself at all.
I have no idea where this shaving craze came from, but agree...it does make ones private are look like a young girl...I do not see the appeal in that at all!

NEVER shave down there, it makes the growth stronger.
If you decide to go for a Hollywood, find a beautician that uses the sugaring method as it is the least painful way of doing it.
You can use Veet, but it can sting and that is the reason they put the warning on the boxes.
As to why men ask, some of them do not like rummaging through the undergrowth

I have done it before for a laugh and it does make it more sensitive. It is however horrible when it starts to grow back! Really itchy and very uncomfortable. I think it is something you should do if you want to and not because someone is pressurising you into doing! As you say you are a clean person and he is the one with an issue. If you are unhappy about this don't do it! Talk to him and discuss further but do not do it because he is making you feel bad. He sounds a bit of a bully.....
Oh, one thing I do is to cut it quite short, it is not such a drastic measure and it looks nice. I use one of those machines guys use to cut their hair.....

Tell him where to go dump him even and find someone who will take you for who you are, he has no respect for women, having hair down there is not unhygienic as the past posts have pointed out its there to stop infections, it's your body and what you do with it is your business , I find the hole shaving thing a little disturbing and I find a woman with hair down there a lot more attractive than a woman without.

your pubic hair is there for a reason, to keep out infections kinda like the hair in your nose...Would you want to shave the hairs off completely in your nose, think about what all would be going into your lungs. If you really want to shave use hair clippers without any attachments, thats what I use on my GF cause I dont really like the big "bush" thing either.

Do whatever makes you feel comfortable girl!!!
It is not unhygenic to have pubic hair. But a nicely trimmed pubis does look very sexy plus it is a lot easier when performing oral action.

Don't shave, it's a pain and it'll probably hurt. If your boyfriend doesn't accept you for who you are (hair and all), tell him to deal or get lost. Oh, and it's not unhygenic, it's fine.

It's not unhygienic. It is a fashion thing.
Make up your own mind about it - whether or not you want to comply with this guy's request.
It may actually be that it just turns him off and he prefers shaved.
He should take you for who you are.
Shaving/depilating CAN in fact cause harm. I myself have seen 2 cases present to the emergency department - one very embarrassed couple because they were waxing the area and caused a minor laceration between labia majora and labia minora (which they OBGYN eventually decided to do nothing about - it would heal by itself) - and one very distressed 16yo girl with labia swollen up to 3-4X their normal size... she had gotten a staph infection in the area from shaving.
