When some else is doing it, then its murder. When you do it yourself, then its assassination and when you control the media you can make the sheep's believe you did them a a favor.

It's now definitely linked to murder of someone of some level of importance, but this is misleading. It's actually just attack by stealth. You actually don't even need to KILL the person to technically have "assassinated" them.
But like decimate (destroy 10% of something) and anti-social (outright hostile toward social order), the word's connotation is becoming it meaning.

An assassination has political connections and is not done out of hate usually, it is done because it would benefit someone to have that person killed. An assassination is done by a professional killer.
