Yes, it was served like a cafeteria.
Food was good with rice, lamb, chicken and curry dishes.

I would not say that it is the best food but pretty good and better than fast food.

Shamshiri Grill at 1712 Westwood Blvd. in West Los Angeles is great. You can get shishcabobs of shrimp, chicken, or steak, served with rice with a dash of safron on the rice. It's really good and the plates are big.

As pointed out by several people who answered your question, Middle Eastern covers a lot of ground. Everything from Armenian to Lebanese to Moroccan to Turkish and beyond.

Yummy cheap lunch -- Eat a Pita on Fairfax north of Beverly. Good schwarma. Outdoor seating only, parking sucks.

Spitz on Colorado near Occidental College is cute, cheap and they have yummy desserts.

Moun of Tunis is great, nicer, pricier, a good date place. It's on Sunset right near the Guitar Center.

I haven't eaten at one there, and don't remember seeing any when I was living in Irvine (big shock, I know) but look for either a Lebanese place or a Persian place specifically.
