both the red handbrake warning light and the amber abs warning light come on occasionally while driving. a local garage said that 4 valves in the abs system were showing up as faulty on his diagnostic test, but this verdict differs from the fiat handbook and the fiat website. both of those say that the two warning lights together definitely indicate an ebd (electronic braking device) problem. i want to know how easy this is to repair myself.

EBD is Electronic Brakeforce Distribution.
As with all things electronic, it is very difficult to diagnose yourself.
It may be a relatively simple fix, but finding out what needs to be fixed will require the correct electronic diagnostic equipment.

Your best bet is to take it to your local Fiat dealer, or a local Fiat / Alfa-Romeo independent specialist, and get the problem properly diagnosed.

Don't attempt to repair electronics or brakes unless you really know what you are doing and have the correct tools and equipment. After all, brakes are safety critical.

er, ebd is ABS... and dont stake your life on the crappy italian idea of a handbook to make teh decision as to whether its safe or not. unfortunately, it probably means your fiat is a scrapper, as these ABS sensors are very expensive.

and yes i know it probably brakes perfectly... but if your ABS isnt working, and you think it is, itll lock up on corners when appllied hard..ie you really really need to stop... take it to a garage, youll live longer.
