They are careless and don't check to see if it has a barcode because they don't have to find one since they think it is the cashier's responsibility.

Because they want to buy it. Duh!

I've been on both sides of the register. There is no excuse for the cashier to get an attitude toward the customer. It is not the customer's fault. The customer is simply trying to buy an item. Hey, if there is no purchase, there's no need for a cashier. It's as simple as that. I'm POSITIVE the customer doesn't want to be there any longer than he or she has to be. They don't like waiting any more than the person stuck behind them. There's a possibility that the customer DID look for the barcode, found none, and could also not find any floor personnel to ticket that item. Who does that leave? The cashier.

What would you have the cashier do? Say, "I'm sorry, that item is not for sale today. It doesn't have a bar code. You'll have to put that back." I think not. Competition is fierce in business. The only way it can keep up with or exceed the competiton is through excellent customer service. If you treat the customer like a dog, they will not return.

On the other hand, this has to fall back on management. No, they aren't the ones ticketing the items, but it is their responsibility to see that it gets done, and also to hire the cashier with the friendliest and most helpful attitude.

It's business. If you want to survive, you'd better make sure your customers will want to return.

Why don't stores have people that check for items that don't have tags or barcodes on them? Seems to me that this could be eliminated some just by the items that are being returned by customers, or being tried on in dressing rooms be double checked by store staff and then a barcode could be added to the item to make the shopping experience better for all of us.

because they want to buy them, why is the shoppers responsibility to ensure it has a barcode on it? surely it should be the responsibility of the shop to make sure all of their products are in a good condition ready for sale, this should include the barcodes.

Not the fault of the shopper. It is the responsibility of the store to label their items.

Either you see many items with bar codes, so you don't INSPECT the one you pick up, or there is only one left.

If you are a cashier, I will come visit your stand with a basket full of items...all with no barcodes.

just kidding!!

Hey that is a very good question. I am a cashier and it's really annoying when people do this and get impatient about it. It's not our fault that they did that. It's also very irritating when people scream and cuss at you because it's a mail in rebate and they don't want to waste their time mailing it in. They want you to take the money off at the register when you aren't allowed to do that. Then they go complain to your manager that you are giving bad customer service because you are new and didn't memorize the hundreds of mail in rebates that change every week. Ya now that is annoying. People need to learn to be grateful for what they have instead of being greedy and ignorant. It really just bugs me because I am as nice as can be and they still are ungrateful.

Because as a shopper you don't look for a barcode. That's what a cashier does.

Well, as your CUSTOMER...it isnt MY JOB to make sure your items are tagged properly.

I dont look for the barcode, give me a break.

That would be for you or one of your other low paid associates to decide who left the barcode off, you idiot.

Sometimes they don't know there is no tag. Sometimes it is the last one and they can't find another one like it for the code. I have been on both the giving and receiving end of this one and is can be very irritating on both ends. Sometimes people just want to tick people off and take things that don't have a bar code or they take it off their selves. Why do we do any of the things we do? There are a million answers.

Not everyone is careless. Sometimes the barcode falls off when they put other stuff in their basket, and yes there are some people who just don't look.
