Okay, I am thinking about getting two female mice.. but need advice.

How long do they live?
What do they need, how much does it cost, where can I find it?

I am researching them right now, so please don't say "RESEARCH YOURSELF!" I would just like any info possible.

THANKS!

Do you have an estimate for the overall cost of bedding, the 2 mice, food, water, supplies to put the food and water in, an aquariam with a lid and anything else NEEDED?

Thanks!

I have mice too and they're the sweetest, most lovable pets I've ever had - be prepared to fall in love with your little ones.
Unfortunately mice only live 1 1/2 - 2 1/2 years on average, if well-cared for.
In some ways their care is easier than other pets - they're awake early in the morning and in the evening and at night, when you're home from work, so the time when they need company is the same as when you're home.
On the other hand, they're pretty delicate and need optimum care - good quality, varied food and good hygiene in their cage - in order to thrive and not get sick.
With my mice I clean their cage twice a week, on a regular schedule (for example, every Wednesday and Sunday evening). Regularity is also important for mice - to get fed, changed, etc. always at about the same time.
I wash their water bottle and give them fresh water every other day, or every day if it's hot, and put two drops of rodent vitamin in their water each time I change the water.
I give them about a tablespoon of dry food per day - more or less depending on the mouse, whether she's very active, tending to be overweight, etc. - and each evening I give a little fresh fruit or steamed vegetable, for extra vitamins and to keep their digestion working well. My mice love steamed sweet potatoes, broccoli, carrots, peas, zucchini plus cucumber, salad, tomatoes and watermelon. Just make sure to remove any uneaten fresh food like that before you go to bed, otherwise it could spoil.
Also make sure any fruit and veg is well-washed, free of chemicals (organic is always safest for them) and then dried off before you give it to them.
Mice are very curious and playful too, so they should have the biggest possible tank or cage possible, with a wheel and a nest box to sleep in (empty cardboard boxes from things like tissues make good, disposable nest boxes), plus whatever toys you can provide - paper towel or toilet paper tubes, small, empty boxes, old socks - anything as long as it's safe for them in case they chew on it, since mice will taste and nibble everything in their cage.
One last thing, I'd recommend getting a good book on pet mice care from the pet shop and looking through it before you bring your pets home.
It sounds like alot to do, but once you get settled with them it becomes easy and they'll return all the attention and affection you give them.

Don't ever use cedar chips ! It can cause respiratory infections in small mammals. The best bedding is aspen or carefresh.
Mice do not live real long. If taken care of, they could live for a year. But I wouldn't expect much longer than that.

They will need a small cage with a lid. You can use a regular 10 gallon aquarium with a mesh lid(you can get at any pet store) water bottle, food bowl, a small house inside the cage is always good, a wheel if you want one.. not necessary.
The start up cost will probably be around $50. ($10 cage, $10 lid, $5 bottle, $3 bowl, $5 house, $6 for the mice , $5 wheel, and your start-up food... prices may vary a bit depending on where you are)

You can find everything you need at almost any local pet store. Just go in and talk to an employee. Most will know everything you need for mice.

Good Luck

I have a mousery, The females are a good choice, they don't smell strong, as opposed to males. Their life expectancy is 2 years, on average. But I have a male that is 4, I know because I raised him. A 10 gallon aquarium from 10 to $15 from W M will do fine. make sure to put a 1/4 mesh wire top on it to prevent escaping, you can buy these for about the same price as the aquariem,or make your own, for a about $1. mouse food is not expensive, thet don't eat much. use aspen shavings or bedding pellets, you can find these at any pet store. add a small water bottle and keep it clean. also change the bedding 2 times a week. Enjoy your mice, they make wonderful pets. If you live close to Ky. I could give you the mice for free. Lou

We had three female mice that lived for between 3 and 7 months.

You will spend about 30-50 dollars on a cage purchase and the basics (water dispenser, mouse muesli, something for the bottom af the cage to absorb moisture and any cute play things).

Any reputable pet store will have mice. Try to pick average-sized ones that have a colour pattern you like but don't pick scrawny ones as there may be a health reason behind their small size.

If they are they same size, there will be less chance of 'bullying'.

Once they are in their new home, you will need to buy a 500-750g bag of food maybe fortnightly. Keep their water topped up and give them occasional treats like carrot and bread crusts. They shouldn't eat green leafy items like lettuce and celery - something to do with their digetive setup.
They love peanut butter and sunflower seed, but go easy on them as they are very fattening.

Well I raise mice so I think I can help you out. At Wal Mart they have plain 10 gallon aquariums for 10 dollars without a lid. Then if you go to a pet store you can get a lid made for animals like mice to go on the aquarium. Or you could also buy a hampster cage. For your mice you will need : a water bottle, a food dish, a good kind of mouse food...or gerbil food will do fine also. You will need to buy some kind of bedding like cedar chips. Unfortunatly mice do not live very long. They only live about 3 years. If you need anything else email me : kowell@eminem.com
