I was there last winter for 5 days, had no problem at all !
But okay, be somewhat carefull. Most of the people I know who visit India have some diarree. But most people have this problem if they travel to Asia, Africa, or event to each country with different food and so...
It can be hard to travel in India because of the weather (hot and rain) and to see all the poor people living on the streets. And then you the traffic and the mass of people, and between them you have the cows just walking everywhere in the streets...
But don't be afraid, just go there, be open for different cultures and enjoy it!

Well- some of the answers here are so damn wrong!
India is more than a LAND of SNAKE CHARMERS and POOR BEGGARS!
We are a developing country and as with all developing countries in the past and present we have POCKETS of HIGH GROWTH and AFFLUENCE and those which are POOR!
You have the best eating joints is INDIA, The BEST HOTELS etc! The wonderful backwaters in Kerala and beaches in Goa. Hills in Himachal Pradesh. It is a complete package.
HOWEVER- There are some common ailments which foreign travellers face. They are related to stomach upsets etc. Always drink PACKAGED WATER! Costs around rs 12 per bottle (around 0.25 CENTS). More importantly- Drink only known brands- like KINLEY, BISLERI or AQUAFINA- etc.
Avoid the TEMPTATION of Street food. generally you can judge the quality by the amount of cleanliness. Spend some more and you can get it at a good restaurant.
And always AVOID COLD drinks/eatables - like LASSI (sweetend youghurt mixed with water), fresh juices etc. You ll get PACKAGED SUBSITUTES for all these.
Also in case you fall sick- consult a reputed DOCTOR or a BIG HOSPITAL for your medicine.
Be prepared for rush, traffic snarls, loud horns...
But also be prepared for a truly colorful, magical, mystical experience...
Have a great trip...

People took your question the wrong way but I will answer it thinking positevely:
YOU WILL NOT GET A DISEASE IF YOU FOLLOW COMMON SENCE in terms of:
--Do not drink outside water. Always buy a bottle or more.
--Do not eat in small places because you do not know what oil and water they used and your stomach in general might not be used to the food.
--Get shots if you are concerned.
--follow the above...eat carefully.
Also, now a days India is not what you might imagine it as so you will be fine in Big cities for sure:
Mumbai
Chennai
Delhi
Bangalore
Many others..
If going to small villages plan accordingly and again follow the above.

You will not get any disease in India normally. Someone has talked about "elephantasis" and this is ridiculous. Foreigners visiting India normally get their stomach upset and nother else.

You are not more suceptible go get any diesease in india, than any other part of the world. However, carry bottled water, dont eat from road side eateries, and avoid using public toilets, to minimize the chances.
Best of luck.

no desease you will get. Millions of people are living there happily and nothing happens to them. Only you can get your stomack upset during the first week because of food and water change.
