Parents today tend to be one of two things: Either overworked and exhausted, or just play lazy. Either way, the level of parental involvement today is nowhere near where it used to be.
I've got three kids. The school had parent teacher conferences last year, and actually offered the kids extra credit if their parents showed up. Out of a class of 26 students, only my wife and I, along with 3 other parents, showed up.
Back when I went to school, almost every kid had at least one parent in attendance.

Liberals made the schools take away the paddles from the teachers, so now, since the kids know they cannot be punished when they act up in class, will do anything they want to.

It is the parents fault for not disciplining their kids. At my house, it depended on the situation (if you were defending yourself from a fight someone else started, for example). If I failed math because I tried and couldn't understand the subject, then we would just try harder. However, if you did something intentional (start a fight, skip school, or something like that) you were in for it.
