I had a fly in my kitchen that I tried to catch without killing it, so I crept up on the little blighter, paper towel at the ready but each time I closed in the blessed thing flew away. So for it's sheer audacity and devlish cunning, I opened the window and let it out to fight another day. But it better not return here or else.

Apart from splattering with a newspaper what would you have done to rid your self a wee fly. Reward ....10 points for the best tip day.. on catching a fly without killing it.

this is really hard but it works,
don't laugh! but slap them when they fly past you, they will fall to the floor stunned, you then pick the up and place them outside, i have shown my kids this technique several times and they are amazed by my powers of the force,

Well you apparently catch more flies with honey than with vinegar, so I would advise against trying to lure it somewhere with chips.

I would get a milk bottle, put some sugar (or honey!) in it (and round the rim) and wait patiently for the fly to, umm, fly in.

Then hand over the top, outside it goes to freedom!

You'll never sneak up on it, their like Neo from the Martix, they can feel when someone is after them and can move at 100 times the speed of you.

A fly is quick, but can only ever move directly upwards when it has landed. So the easiest way is to get two plastic bowls and close them together quickly about 10 inches above the fly.

Don't try it when it's in flight!

I agree with Ryn, knock the little beggar out then pick him up by a leg and chuck him out the window. I've used fly-swats and newspapers to great effect with 'fly tennis' - as long as you don't splat them into something, it just dazes them for a few minutes. Or for the really tiny ones, sometimes just clapping your hands together near them will surprise them into a dizzy state on the floor...

Flies see us in a sort of slow motion. As a kid I used to catch flies to feed to spiders and the trick is to go really really slowly so they hardly see you move at all. I used to use a glass jar and some paper.

call me heinous, brutish and vile but when flies enter my home they very rarely leave alive. Same goes for all insects.. cant abide them.
