It's the male, and it's on the end of the toes on it's back feet.
When I was in Australia, I had the great good fortune to see and pet a captive platypus, so I know firsthand.

- only the male platypus has the spur that injects poison (the female platypus has a rudimentary spur but does not inject poison)
