Actually, Russia was NEVER called the USSR. The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics was made up of 15 so-called "independent republics" which included the largest, the "Russian Soviet Federated Socialist Republic."
The USSR or in Russian. Soyuz Sovetskikh Sotsialisticheskikh Respublik (CCCP) was formed in 1922 while Lenin was still the leader.
That means that under Lenin, Russia was called the "Russian Soviet Federated Socialist Republic."

Russia was one of the "republics" that were in the "Union of Soviet Socialist Republics." The USSR was established under Lenin, in 1922, and is considered the successor to the tsarist empire.

In zose days, (und alzo in ze days of Stalin, ecktually), ve used to call it "Russia".
You may be a leetle confused by ze fact zat 'Russia' vos jus one state wizin the CCCP.
Ze Amerikans, with their typically disregard for ektual Vurld Geography, used to call ze whole CCCP "Russia", a leetle like callink all of ze USA "Texas-land". Ha-ha! Soviet humour! Oh zose wealthy but wacky fools!
