urtle racing is an old Asian sport, in which water turtles are lined up on a track and raced. It is even common to bet on a particular turtle as would be done for horses.
The turtles are often distinguished by the numbers painted or taped on their shells.
With turtle racing there are two distinct variations; the first, like horse races, would take place on a track (sometimes circular, other times linear), while the second would start with the turtles all being placed in the center of a large circle, the first to pass outside of it being the winner.
There have been a few cases of criticism and even protest of the sport by animal rights activists. One such case was in July, 2001 when Mary Jane Newborn stopped turtle races from being held at numerous Roman Catholic Churches in Cincinnati.

Yes, we have a turtle and tortoise race every year in Glennville, at the Sweet Onion Festival, sometime in April or May. If you bring your turtle, make sure it is kept cool and wet, carefull transported in a strong and stable container with proper ventilation.
I've started a little list of links for you on turtle racing. Enjoy!

At the resort my family owned, we did turtle racing every year. Turned out to be a big event.
Had boards lined up to keep them in line, and whichever made it to the end first (or made it to the end at all) wins. Painted turtles actually move pretty quick for being turtles. :P

They tend to be rather hit or miss. Some bars, college rec departments, etc. sponsor some which are not heavily publicised but it is not nearly as common as it was in the 80's.
