I dont have to have a password to start using my laptop so I wondered if there is a security feature similair to locking a cell phone to prevent someone from using it.

Set a password on your Windows account. That will prevent anyone from using it.

Most systems also allow you to set a boot password but that is childs play to bypass. Some systems will allow you to set a BIOS password that will lock the hard drive that cannot be bypassed. However, if you ever forget the password there is NO WAY to recover the hard drive; it will have to be replaced and all the data on it is lost forever unless you send it to a recovery service. The fee for that is well into 4 figures!

Keep in mind that Windows passwords and BIOS passwords (except the hard drive lock) can be bypassed by anyone who has physical access to the machine and the right tools. You'll have to lock the laptop up to absolutely prevent that.

If you're using Windows go to START>Control Panel>USER ACCOUNT. click on "Computer Administrator" account then Click CREATE PASSWORD. Pretty simple :) Make sure there are no other accounts that can be accessed through the computer and that your guest accounts are off so your kiddos can't get on.

Have fun!

what brand of laptop? - what windows or mac OS are you running? - we need to know these things as well - however, try looking in control panel if windows for a settings section and you should be able to set an admin password from there

Set a boot password in the bios. But be sure to remember it. Then they have to know the password to boot the computer.
