No, you are not obligated to purchase their product. Beware of free offers--this is how you get malware into your computer.
Do you have security programs in place and running on your computer? You need:
1) An anti-virus program (only one)-- keep it updated and run it often;
2) a firewall (only one)--do not use the XP firewall (it covers your ports but does not stop anything (that includess your personal information) from going out the backdoor of your computer;
3) multiple (anti-)spyware programs--I use both Spybot and Ad-aware;
4) MS updates-- can be gotten at http://update.microsoft.com/
I don't mean to scare you, but there are a lot of bad guys out their.
Tip: Don't use a credit card online--call their toll free number. If you must use a credit card online, consider setting one up special--reduce the limit on it to, say, $500. That way if your number does get stolen, it will be maxed out in a hurry. This ensures less hassle for you. I read recently that the FBI will not even investigate use of stolen credit card numbers unless it amounts to more than $20,000!
Set up two e-mail accounts online. One is your primary account (for those people you want to correspond with), the other a dummy account. When you fill out forms online, you do not know whether that info will be sold to advertisers who will then bombard you with their ads. Be sure to go to the dummy account once a week to check these e-mails.
NEVER GIVE OUT ACCOUNT NUMBERS OR PASSWORDS ONLINE NO MATTER HOW OFFICIAL THEY SOUND!
When you accept a free download, there is usually a EULA that you must accept--which few bother to read. Be carefull--some of these allow your name to be removed from the Do-not-call registry and you will be fair game for telemarketers.
The Internet is a lot like the old Wild West--just about anything goes. So have fun, be carefull, and be safe.

There is 'free' where they steal all your bank or credit card info, and SO, you do NOT give out any info to ANY email request! IF you do any transactions, NEVER wire themoney, or send a money order!
Sign up for a legitimate and insured payment service, like Paypal, or, use the checkout at Amazon.com...
Never respond to any email about any bank or credit card, they are all scams. There is no winning lottery that you could have won, if you didn't first BUY a lottery ticket! You CANNOT get a bigger penis, lose 100 pounds, or, get bigger boobs, from the internet's promises!
If they ask you for money, before they can GET you yours, it is a SCAM!!!
The one thing that IS free, is KNOWLEDGE of good and evil, and, the FREE and Open Operating Systems at http://pclinuxos.com
http://livecdlist.com and http://yolinuxos.com
Good enough that Microsoft.com, hotmail.com, and MSN.com all run 15,000 Linux computers EACH!!!

You had better learn right now, nothing is for nothing. For one thing, they want your e-mail address. You will get bombarded with SPAM and cookies. Some sites may give you something, then you are automatically signed up for something else unless you cancel. Be careful here.
