Your question is a fundamental one.
In business there are some products that are mass produced. They are more suited to mass production which can only be economically done by big companies with a huge investment.
In business there are some products which are customized or not required in so large a quantity. These are best manufactured by small companies where the labor costs are low.
Big or small everyone has his day in the sun.

I think that they can. As mentioned Google started after Yahoo, but here is the catch.
Google actually offered to sell their search engine technology to Yahoo for practically nothing. Fast forward a decade and look at how much more Google is worth and used than Yahoo.
It CAN happen.

who says they cant ? and not fair would be a company not being able to start up at all
google started after yahoo....and yahoo for a time even incorporated it as their search engine

the secret is to target a niche market...for instance get local and concentrate on branding!!
