When changing from first to second,do you click up twice or just once,I have never riden a bike before and just want to know more about the theory of it.I'm 85y and dont think i will be learning in practice :)..I read about neutral being between 1st and 2nd and wondered if you just clicked right into 2nd..also do you hold the clutch in as driving a car or do you press it twice ..I understand the other gears 2-5 or 2-6 is normal but was always curious about 1-2 with the neutral in the middle...would really like a good answer on this as I will never be able to do this myself..thank you.

When you shift from first to second gear the shifter passes right through neutral without stopping, though the green "neutral" indicator light on your panel may flash briefly (or not, depending on the model you're riding).

Note: Many bikes now have a gear indicator built into the instrument panel, but many do not, making it necessary for you to learn to mentally keep track of what gear you're in.

To get to neutral you need to gently push the shifter partway between first & second. You'll feel a slight easing of the pressure as you reach neutral and the green indicator light will come on and stay on. Release the clutch lever and the engine should keep running as the bike remains motionless.

I'm 42 and have been riding since I was about 8. You pull the gear lever up once to change from first to second. The same goes for other gears. Yes you hold in on the clutch. It is basically the same as driving a standard shift car. The only difference is your using your hand for the clutch on a bike as opposed to your foot for the clutch in a car. If the bike is a 6 speed and you are in 6th gear, to gear back down to first you would press on the gear lever 5 times.

Yep it is one click. Neutral is more of a half click and from time to time you will hit it when going from 1st to 2nd, but not a lot.

Neutral is a soft click between 1st and 2nd. My Kawasaki is equipped with a "Positive Neutral Finder", when it is stopped one click up is neutral.

just click up 1 time for second gear., neutral is up 1 click too but it is a soft click, if you click it hard it goes into second.
