They drive a line painter down the highway that sprays the lines automatically. A survey crew marks the location of the lines on the roadway surface to ensure that they are straight. The newest line painter rigs "read" those markings to ensure accuracy. The older ones depend on the hand and eye coordination of the operator.

they have a big truck that has a paint system on it, and it has a sprayer on the bottom of it. They have computers on the truck that tell them if it is straight and just how far to space the lines, for the Broken ones. then they just drive down the road and spray them on...

There's a special machine they use, they drive down the middle of the street with and it paints the lines.
