Racism is based in fear. We don't know others, so we fear. It is not a better than, but a fear of that is rampant in racism. Get to know what you fear, and fear has not hold on your thoughts or actions.

I like the answer of Jmmevolve too.
Because some people think they are better than others.
Racism is a tool of oppression used by Fascists and Bigots to achieve world domination and a monoculture in the political and socio-economic struggle between different countries, races, religions and ethnic groups - as opposed to the better alternative of Peaceful Coexistence, Understranding, Diversity and Cooperation.
Racism says more about the Fear (of differences) and Phobias of the Racist Oppressor than it does about the Victim.

I like the answer of jmmevolve for it covers many other subjects. Additionally, there are two ways to advance in the world, one is difficult but rewarding, the other easy but seldom accomplishes anything.
A. Work and educate yourself.
B. Tear down everyone else so you will look better by comparison.
B. is a version of racism. Odd this came up this morning. Last night I dreamed I was with a good looking black woman. Very pleasant dream.

I wonder this too I have pondered if its a hard wired survival thing in some way? You know like a prehistoric thing whereeby we try to bring bout the destruction of our percieved ;'enemies'.
It could be laziness, that people are too lazy to find out about others but prefer to dump peole into categories of people and therefor can naking big sweeping statements and be bigoted.
Its all pretty sad really. One by one though we can make a difference, by treating people with respect. Even when we are not treated the same. Its hard!

Some people are better than others.... were're not all equal. Not just on a racial divide, but more on a cultural and political one. You can't just except everyone to be equal, we are all self interested and get along with other people who think the same way we do. Its not skin colour its social standing, often elaborated by skin colour.
1 American life is worth more than all the lives in Somalia is a quote that comes to mind.

Racism exists because we are animals. Lions kill Cheetas they are both cats but its about competition and genetics - the selfish gene. So many animals are racist even insects. The survival of the fittest. Man's laws have made it a crime to be racist but it is a character of animals just as so many things that man does is in their nature but the Laws of Man has made us all criminals.
We can all block out our natural urges in times when there is plenty of food and oil and basically goods and money then we can live together - but when these things become scarce then racism comes back deep within our nature to fight for survival. Nothing is good or bad it is just in Nature and Man's Laws based on Idealistic intentions makes us all feel like we are bad but it is Nature. I want everyone to live in peace and treat each other equal but when the **** hits the fan and we are competing to survive then 'birds of a feather will flock together' - its NATURE.

Yes, fear of the unknown plays a great part, and therefore it can be put down to ignorance. It would, however, be wrong to assume that racism is something only white people express. It may come as a shock to white anglo saxon protestants, but other races can be racists too.

Ignorance (non-exposure) to others and their cultures. If everyone had just a chance to spend an hour with someone of another culture, I believe racism would be dramatically reduced.
In other cases, people just live to hate. Thankfully most of those people end up in prison.

I believe racism in America started when the colonizers need to justify slavery so they said Africans were inferior.

Racism exists because of ignorance, selfishness. Lots of people think that IT'S ALL ABOUT THEM.... It's just ignorance and selfishness. We're all part of the same race.... THE HUMAN RACE!!!!!

power, ignorance, fear = prejudice
most policies, decisions, strategies are base on white euro centric thinking,
it has developed in to the way we know racism today after the world wars, when Europe became more multi-cultural, people fear change, loosing status and misunderstanding.
