You can sex them (depending on what kind of gouramis) by the color and fins. Males more colourful and have longer, less rounded fins.

Also, they're mostly easy going so you can keep them with anything except the aggressive cichlids.

Gouramis look good with other gouramis and there are so many different kinds and colors, thats all you need. The females have less color and often appear more grey in color, but males get along fine and are more colorful.

Danios, Minnows, Rainbowfish, Rasboras and Tetras. Do not mix Gouramis with Bettas.

not sure about the sexing of them...but we have two opaline gournamis and they are in a tank with tiger barbs, black tetras (both male and female there), an algae eater, a glass, and some upside-down catfish

Sexing is something requiring a book.
Gouramis can get quite big, so B cautious of other big fish.
Tetras or similar & small angel fish, should B ok.
