It is called being out of thought and out of mind. The short answer is, they don't want to know. Being ignorant may even play a role in it.

Because ultimately they can't change any of the realities.
They also have a lot to think about, too many problems, too many obligations.
Life is not easy, meanwhile, being aware of the realities is really interesting if people can bear learning about it.

Easy, because what each person sees as reality is different. Each person's world view is a product of their family's version of reality, their life experiences, their religion (or lack of), and the society in which they live.

For example, what I see as the reality about gays and lesbians might differ greatly from yours.

Princeton University's Webnet http://wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn?s=reality
defines reality as all of your experiences that determine how things appear to you; "his world was shattered"; "we live in different worlds"; "for them demons were as much a part of reality as trees were"

Because they don't want to face them. Many people are of the ignorant belief that if you stick your head in the sand, the problems will just go away.

Because they are afraid of the truth. They are much happier believing something else because it is probably what they have known all their lives. Changing your beliefs/point of view can be difficult for some people because it is "uncomfortable" or "weird" for them.

we are in denial of someone else's plight. we don't have any sense of connection. as long as we're not affected, then their problems do not exist. so sad.
