Factor 1. The biggest reason for learning a second language living in a place where people speak a language that you don't.
If you don't learn, you can't function fully as a person.

Facotr 2.America is a country that only has 2 other countries as borders, and Canadians speak English, which I believe is why we as a people aren't pushed into learning other languages in school. In Europe, whose countries are bordered by many different language groups, so that students from those countries learn French, Spanish, German, English and others in school and it's not uncommon for a person to speak 3 or more languages.

Factor 3. The economic and/or political power of a country is a big factor as to whether people from other countries wish to learn that language. ...witness the increased number of people learning Chinese and Arabic in the U.S. today.

Learning a second language exposes a person to the culture, lifestyles and history of that country. It also is a great workout for the brain as it uses and reinforces basic thought processes and problem solving techniques. I lived in Mexico City for 2 years and was totally immersed in having to learn the language. It was invigorating. When I started having meaningful conversations in Spanish, I felt I had accomplished a goal. And, the reaction of the people who only spoke Spanish was beautiful as it made us friendly and cooperative very quickly.

Liking the culture of the country where that language is spoken and wanting to go there. That's why I'm learning Japanese.

I've always thought that the language barriers were very restrictive. They prevent you from accessing the art and literature and philosophy of other people. I feel more free knowing other languages.

I in my opinion took three years of Latin and did not discover it too tough to decide on up similar to some other language, however I determined it relatively effortless for the reason that alot of the english language is derived from latin so alot of the phrases are traditional
