We left our 2 yr. old hamster in someones care while we were away for a wk. We had a heat wave that week, and when we got home she was lethargic and cold to the touch, and had lost weight. This morning her EYE HAD POPPED OUT! I've been making her pasta and eggs since she wasn't eating well. And feeding her water from an eyedropper. Could this all be from dehydration? She was not in a/c for a week while we were gone. Please tell me if anyone has seen this. The last time we took one of our hamsters to the vet it ended up costing us almost $300 and we still ended up putting her to sleep. Can't afford that again! Thanks for any help.

OMG. I would never trust those people again to take care of anything. Keep the water down her, and go and buy some small animal vitamins that specifies for hamsters and add a drop in each eye dropper you give her of water for the entire day. Get some triple antibiotic ointment and put on the poor things eye so it can help from infection and put moisture back into it. My vet had me do this to my dog when another dog made his eye pop out. It will loose sight in the eye anyway. The ointment will not hurt the hamster.

You're doing exactly the right thing. I don't know what might have happened. I don't think eyes pop out due to dehydration. Unless her eye dried out from lack of liquid. I would talk to the pet sitter because it seems that your hamster wasn't taken care of. If your vet can't do anything about it, hamsters don't have to have eyes. You can still love a blind, eyeless hamster, or you could get an eyepatch.

Take her to the wet. I don't think there is anything you can do in this case all by yourself. Its pretty serious.

Leave your pets with someone who loves them and can take good care of them when you are away.
