Learn on an Accoustic ... its a little tougher on the fingers but once you get it down .. electric is a cinch
also While your Learning you will prefer the quieter soft sound versus the AMPLIFIED Noise!! lol where Everybody Hears your Mistakes!

1. buy an acoustic guitar. the electric will be really easy if you learn to play on an acoustic first. it will build up your finger strength quicker.
2. see what you can do on your own. buy a beginners guide, learn the names of the different parts of the guitar and how to make some basic chords.
3. practice, practice, practice. at least an hour every day. pick 3 chords you can make pretty easily, like G,E, & A, and practice changing back and forth between them.
4. this should have you on your way.
5. stand in front of a mirror, and practice your rock star poses.
haha

Cut nails so they are in line with the tops of your fingers and begin toughening the tops of your fingers now as they will bleed a little when you first get started.
Your choice of guitar type depends a lot on the style of music you wish to play most. Just make sure you buy a good guitar and not a cheap quality one.

My biggest mistake was trying to press too hard on the frets. You only need enough pressure to stop the string vibrating. I am listing a couple of my favorite sites for you.
B.B. King said that playing the guitar is all about "playing". Not working the guitar.
