Physiologically speaking, only aspirin and its generics would help, because period cramps have nature other than spastic pain, which is lessened with normal painkillers (spasmolythics). Their origin is related to leykines, which are influenced with aspirin.
Extremely painful periods may be also due to some hormonal problems, so I hope, you have already discussed this issue with your gyn.
If you lack iron, then remember that it takes months of taking iron supplements before your iron level would be back to normal. A human body is only capable of accepting a limited amount of iron every day, so it doesn't help to increase your iron intake up to exorbitant heights. Just take your time.

You might feel low on energy because of low iron - try high protein foods for that - maybe even a low iron supplement a few days before you are supposed to start. I was always told to drink milk to help w/ the cramps.
If they are this bad every month - you might think about seeing your doctor - they shouldn't be keeping you awake....

Midol works for some people. I liked Premsyn (probably not spelled right, but close enough for you to find it on the shelf at the store) better because it worked so well on my cranky pms symptoms. There are quite a few good products for women out there that address exactly what you've experienced.

Exercise definitely works!
When I get my period, cramps always follow. But last month I played so much volleyball and tennis during that time, and there were no cramps...but good rest and felt like I didn't even have my period, hahah.
It's proven to work as well :)

TAking two Aleve works best.
I finally sought help from my doctor and she put me on prescription Aleve which was teh equiv of taking 4 at one time. It raised my pulse adn blood pressure quite a bit though so ask your Dr first, this was along time ago when it just came out and everyone was popping it like crazy.
My point: Seek help from your Dr.
