The house we just bought is great. But just one downside. The house is covered in ugly aluminum siding. My wife and I are considering replacing the siding with a more traditional wood clapboard. We live at the edge of a historic district and this style would look attractive and conform to the rest of the neighborhood.

The house is a small 2-story colonial. About 1300 square feet. Anyone know what kind of cost we are looking at? I'm just looking for a ballpark figure...

your costs are gonna be determined by the product you use.red ceder clapboards are gonna be the most exspensive, but are the best looking and most wear resistant.remember to use stainless steel nails with any red ceder product.if going to paint then you can use pine siding, hardy board(which is a cement composite).then there is vinyl,or how about white ceder shake shingles.

as for the labor price, you have to remove the aluminium siding to see if any problems exist under it.one of the pluses in using aluminium or vinyl siding is that you can install it over a variety of imperfections and materials.when it comes to real wood products you need a smooth surface work with.most siding is charged by the square, that is a ten by ten foot area.on cape cod the price ranges from $80.00 to $120.00 per square, depending on the house.

as much as i adore real wood, nothing compares to the beauty, you might be best served to go with vinyl siding.it comes in different colors and textures and may be the best choice for you.in my experience vinyl runs about $40.00 a square to put up.go with a quality product and you will be happier in the long run.good luck.

instead of clapboard y not use a vinyl siding that goes well with your surroundings will look as good and would be a whole lot cheaper. They do make siding in a great range of colour and style so check this out first and compare.

biggest cost is mantaining clapboard & global warmth from needless dead trees. history cannot exist without a future. paint the siding. can do.
