Male betta's will only tolerate a female betta when they are ready to mate. Its just a common misconception that you can put the two together. Seperate them quickly!

You can generally tell that they will get along for a bit when the male makes a bubble nest. At that point you can put the female in to lay the eggs. After she does though, its better to seperate them again. The male will fertalize the eggs & watch the young fry. It wont be too much longer till you have to take the fry out of your tank & give them their own bowl too.

Good luck!

The male will kill the female if rejected. He will nip at her fins until she has none left and she will be too exhausted and not enough fin left to go up and take a breath. If you are breeding them you should have (at least) a 3:1 ratio of females to males. Even after breeding you should remove the females from the males.
They usually will not live harmoniously together. I have had a community tank and had other aggressive fish with a single male Betta and he was fine.
If you value your fish I would separate them and add some extra stress coat with the female help heal her wounds.

If your bettas really are male/female, it is ok for them to be together, as long as they get along. Considering that you feel the male will hurt the female, I would separate them. You can always put the female betta in with another non-aggressive fish if you are concerned that it wants a buddy. I have a betta in a community aquarium and he is perfectly happy. Just be sure there are no aggressive fish or fish that nip at fins.

Only one male should be kept in a tank; however, smaller, shorter-finned females may be housed together.

Once laid by the female, the eggs are tended by the male in a bubble nest.

A carnivore, the Siamese Fighting Betta will eat all types of live food as well as freeze-dried flakes and frozen foods.

Compatibility: Tetras, Danios, Angelfish, Livebearers, Rasboras, Loaches, Plecos, and Catfish.

i have had the same problem. what the chines used to do was fight two mails and take the winner (they will fight to the death) and then bread him with a female that was ready to lay eggs. you should separate them till he is making a bubble nest. then check and see if your female has a white spot on her under belly right behind her botten fins. when you put them together they should fight at first. he will wrap himself around her and this will make her lay her eggs. she will only let him catch her if she likes his bubble nest. my male Betta is 2 years old, and my female is less than 1 year. she doesn't seem to like him very much so i am going to get two that are close to the same age and see if that works. i have seen a female kill a male, and the other way around. so separate them for the time being. they are very hard to breed. i have only done it 6 times so far. i had to fight them every time but to me that seems a little barbaric. hope this helps

Betta are also known as 'the fighting fish'.... for a reason.
Your best chance, besides seperating them, is to house them in a larger tank with alot of ornaments ((to hide)).

If you don't want the female to get hurt then you should keep then you should separate the two. If you want to breed them then either find another male or another female. That would be the best way.

Betta fish are not meant to be together in the same bowl. You should sepearte them before they kill each other.

Are you SURE that one is a boy and one is a girl? These fish can not be in the same tank if they are the same sex. I would double check.

Are you sure its a male and a female? If so .... I'd separate them and find the girl another male beta. Maybe those 2 just aren't compatible.
