We got two male mice yesterday. They are very cute! This morning, we only have one in the cage. There is NO WAY the other one could have escaped. Plus, the first mouse. is now verrrrry fat. Could he have eaten the other one????

Where did you buy your mice? The person at the pet store or the breeder should have told you that two males should almost NEVER be housed together. Even littermates usually get aggressive towards eachother eventually and could severly injure or kill the other seemingly out of nowhere.

Mice make amazing, friendly pets, but only when they are kept properly. I have never had mice injure or kill eachother, let alone eat the corpse, but that is because I have always seperated the males and have two large female tanks which all have a colony that get along fine.

I would say that it is very possible that the other male ate the mouse, although there should still be some sort of trace of the other- be it blood, pieces of mouse, or bones. Are you sure the other didn't escape? If they are young mice and they are in a wire cage, it may still be a possibility even if it doesn't seem possible. Mice can sometimes squeeze through spaces as small as 1/2 an inch, or perhaps the door wasn't closed properly, or not attached to the base correctly?

If the mice are housed in a glass tank with a secure lid, then escape is unlikely. I would look for traces of the other mouse underneath houses or toys or even buried in the bedding to know for sure. However I know female mice rarely leave much behind even after giving birth, so I can't say for sure how much of a mess there would be.

I breed mice and work at a pet store and have so far never witnessed anything like this. From now on, either way, make sure to keep the remaining boy by himself. He might seem lonely, but as long as he has stuff to keep him busy- cardboard tubes and/or boxes, a wheel, and bird toys all make excellent playthings.

Good luck! Congrats on the mice too, even if you've started off with a bad experience, I hope everything goes uphill from here.

Yes, but it is usually due to over crowding. If you don't see blood, I would think that he was not eaten. Mice can flatten themselves so that they can get thru some very tight places. Listen for eating noises late at nite. You may find him. As far as canabalism goes, I have seen this happen at a wholesalers (a person who raised rats and mice for the pet shops). They would have so many in a ten gallon aquarium, there was no room to move except over each other. They'd make room by disposing of their fellow inmates.

#1, Sorry for the gorry discovery. I agree with Episco, Even if it was a female with babies they tend to eat those also. I also agree with the cat idea.
They just had a tidbit on news about rats and mice. There is a club for people with them and some had hundred of them. Here are the web sites for them(3):

Not me. I'll stick to cats and dogs.

Yes, they can kill and eat each other. If you get a male and female and put them together then you will have a litter and have 10 and then it is just wild. IF you must have two then get them spayed or neutered so you will not be breeding them!

It is a distinct posibility....ESPECIALLY if they were both the same gender. I've seen it happen many times before. If you get mice, make sure they are different genders if they are in the same cage.

properly for one million you mustn't in any respect go away the mouse in the cage with the sanke in spite of if its a warm snake the mouse ought to chew it or consume its eyes and that could reason seriouse issues its unlike you would be waiting to rub ointment on your warm snake if it gets chew and actually now in case you think of your warm snake needs a pal you shouldnt have one in any respect

Yes, I had the same thing happen to mine. The female had babies and she ATE THEM. It was really hard to explain that to my kids.
