dont you know DNS, after a user enters a domain name into the browser address bar, your machine will automatically use this domain name to find its ip. there is no difference between http and https with respect to this point. so when your message arrives google, it's certainly an ip but not a domain name.

https certificate uses domain name to validate.
some sites doesnt care. but looks like google want to do it in right way, which is not allowing access without using domain.
