I wish I knew. This is very close to a problem I have been trying to solve: where did we get the idea of perfection? We've never seen it, but most people have a very good idea of what is perfect.
The motivation to progress is probably bound up with the idea of possible perfection. I have to admit that I can think of no reason except that there is a Supreme Being or Beings, who want this to happen. My thinking fuzzes up there, though.
We could look at it as an offshoot of our will to survive. We wouldn't survive if we simply sat aroiund - so we are motivated to progress if only to the next dinner.
Our big brains have also figured out that a lot of the rest of our lives is helped by motivation to progress.
So there you have it. Higher being, hunger, and social glue. I'll put this question in the Watch list - I'll bet you get some good answers.

How can you expect the answer to be reasonable? Your criterea unfortunately predicates an answer which cannot give you the truth. You're a rascal. By the way, religion is not spelt "reliegen".
If you are going to ask a question as fundamentally important as this you should expect responses which may be based on spiritual truth. The ultimate goal of life has nothing to do with material qualifications or aquisition.

My opinion is beyond religion and it is purely my thoughts.
The goal of life is to discover your own self and purify it. Purifying means removal of all unjust desires and even thoughts. The purpose is to assist the Creator in ruling the world with 100% justice.
Motivation behind the progress! The creator is developing the world for his reign. The spirit of the Creator is urging us to build the world.

I think the motivation to progress is progress. Each generation tries to be one step beyond the one before hand. Tries to reach farther, know more, be better. I am given what, maybe 85 years. I think I need to learn as much as I can, advance my self as much as I can. and then pass that information on to the next generation. Then it is his job to do the same thing. To advance humanity. to be better, smarter then ever before.

to decrease pain and increase pleasure, all else is lost to oblivion. All our accomplishments will be lost in a thousand years or two. If for some reason your bones are fossilized, they too will eventually trun to dust. You make a difference to your children and possibly grandchildren, but eventually they too will turn to dust.
So what's the motivation to do anything knowing that utter death and annihilation awaits us all. Thanks to our instinct for survivial, we have the temporary goal of 'reducing pain and increasing pleasure..."
